The Periodic Table

The periodic table is a chart that organises all known chemical elements in a meaningful way. Elements are arranged by increasing atomic number (the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus) and grouped based on similar chemical and physical properties. This structure helps scientists understand patterns in reactivity, bonding, electron arrangement, and other essential aspects of chemistry.

The periodic table is important because it allows chemists to:

  • Predict the behavior of elements based on their position
  • Understand trends such as atomic size, electronegativity, and ionisation energy
  • Identify families of elements with similar properties (e.g., noble gases, halogens)
  • Infer how elements will interact in chemical reactions

Our worksheet quizzes about the table and gives some handy mnemonics to help to learn the table’s contents. There is also a song which lists elements in a musical way.
