SAT Tutors
Our qualified KS2 tutors will work with your child to ensure that they achieve the age related expectation that is set by the government. All of our KS2 tutors have primary school experience and will help your child to succeed by carefully planning the sessions around your child’s specific learning needs. The KS2 SAT assessment is particularly important as it will be used at secondary school to set targets and inform teaching groups. The exams are no longer tiered. All pupils will sit the same exam, regardless of ability. Typically, the questions get progressively harder as your child progresses through the paper.
KS2 Maths
There are 3 papers for Maths. The first tests arithmetic skills while the other two test Maths reasoning.
Paper 1: This assessment involves around 40 questions about mathematical calculations. The questions are split into two sections: addition and subtraction (1 mark each) and more complex calculations with fractions (1 mark each). Long division and long multiplication questions (2 marks each) are also included.
Papers 2 and 3: This involves contextual questions (questions in words) and involves solving mathematical problems and using mathematical reasoning. Children will have 40 minutes to complete each paper.
KS2 English
Your child will sit two papers for the KS2 English SATs test. Paper 1 and Paper 2, are commonly referred to as the SPAG test (see below). Paper 3 is a comprehension exercise, also known as a reading test. The paper includes a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet, and children have one hour to read and answer the questions. The booklet will consist of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
They will total around 2000 words. As well as this, children will take part in a ‘teacher assessment’ in writing, which is set and marked by their teacher and not during the KS2 SATs week.
KS2 SPAG (spelling, punctuation, grammar)
Paper 1: Grammar, punctuation and language strategies. Your child will have 45 minutes to answer a series of SPAG questions, worth a total of 50 marks, in this paper.
Grammar will contribute approximately 30 marks, punctuation 15 marks, and language strategies (vocabulary) 5 marks.
Paper 2: Spelling. Pupils will be presented with sentence-based questions. They will hear a sentence with a missing word, which will be repeated after the sentence is read. Their task is to fill in the blank with the correct word. The questions are worth 20 marks in total.
KS2 SATs Papers
Unlike KS1, the KS2 SATs exams are assessed and marked externally rather than being internally marked by the teachers at school. Our tutors will use mock KS2 SATs papers and past papers to ensure that your child is ‘exam-ready’ and feels confident to sit their first formal, nationally assessed exams.
