Mark Scheme

All exam boards include this element in their literature papers. Below, is AQA’s mark scheme for unseen poetry.

AO1: Read, understand, and respond to texts. This involves maintaining a critical style and developing an informed personal response, using textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.​

AO2: Analyse the language, form, and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.​

Level 6 (Top Level): Demonstrates a perceptive and assured response to the poem, with sophisticated analysis and insightful interpretations.​

Level 5: Shows a thoughtful and developed response, with clear and relevant analysis supported by apt textual references.​

Level 4: Provides a clear and sustained response, with some analysis and appropriate textual references.​

Level 3: Offers a straightforward response, with some relevant comments and textual support.​

Level 2: Presents a simple response, with limited analysis and basic textual references.​

Level 1 (Lowest Level): Displays a minimal response, with little analysis and few or no textual references.
