Verbal Reasoning

Why Verbal Reasoning Still Matters – Even if It’s No Longer on the Exam

Over the past few years, some grammar and independent schools have changed their entrance assessments. In certain areas, traditional Verbal Reasoning (VR) papers have been reduced, re-structured, or even removed altogether. It’s natural for parents to wonder: If VR isn’t on the test, should we still bother with it?

Here’s why…

1. Enhancing Language Skills

  • Expands vocabulary and improves comprehension.
  • Strengthens the ability to understand word meanings, relationships, and nuances.
  • Supports better reading and writing fluency.

2. Boosting Critical Thinking

  1. Encourages logical connections between ideas rather than rote memorisation.
  2. Trains learners to evaluate arguments, detect assumptions, and draw inferences.
  3. Develops the skill of distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information.

3. Improving Working Memory and Attention

  • Requires holding information in mind while analysing relationships (e.g., solving analogies or syllogisms).
  • Improves focus and mental flexibility when comparing multiple possibilities.

4. Supporting Academic Achievement

  • Verbal reasoning underpins performance in subjects like reading comprehension, literature, and history.
  • Helps in mathematics and science by improving the ability to understand word problems and logical structures.
  • Strengthens test-taking and study skills, as many exams rely heavily on reasoning with language.

5. Encouraging Metacognition (Thinking About Thinking)

  • Learners reflect on how they reach answers, not just the answers themselves.
  • Builds awareness of reasoning strategies (e.g., elimination, analogy, deduction).
  • Supports self-regulation in learning.
